This last February
27, the world was tuned in for the 77th Annual Academy Awards. Very few
events capture a larger audience (43.5 million last year) and generate as
many parties as the Oscars. However, one party in particular stood out for
its star showing and media frenzy: Sir Elton John’s Annual Academy
Awards® Viewing Party. In 2002, the guest list included both Best Actor
and Best Actress winners, Denzel Washington and Halle Berry, respectively.
Sir Elton’s Annual Academy Awards® View Party began 13
years ago to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). Founded in 1992
by Sir Elton, the international non-profit, with offices in Los Angeles
and London, works to provide funding for HIV/AIDS prevention education programs
and direct patient care services. In the USA, the EJAF collaborates with
the National AIDS Fund, an organization based in Washington, DC, and with
Community Partnerships across the country. This collaboration was established
to best facilitate nationwide distribution of grants to communities and
populations most affected by HIV/AIDS. Since its inception, the foundation
has distributed more than $50 million in grants worldwide.
With a star-studded showing and performances by music artists,
including the legendary Sir Elton, the 2005 Annual Academy Awards® View
Party truly was a memorable experience. This year, however, was not only
the best Annual Academy Awards® View Party yet, but also one that humbled
all the rest. For the first time ever, Chopard, the fine jewelry and
watchmaking company, acted as the sole title sponsor of the annual celebration.
With a commitment to quality that has made it one of only three
Swiss watchmakers to be honored with the prestigious Official Seal of Geneva,
Chopard brought the same level of glamour and timelessness in their jewelry
and watches to the movie industry’s most special night. Guests were
treated to a cocktail reception followed by a benefit dinner and viewing
of the Academy Awards telecast. The post-show celebration began immediately
following the Awards ceremony and honored the Oscar® winners and nominees.
Having been an avid supporter of the EJAF for the past five
years, Chopard’s support this year reaffirms its long-term commitment
to the organization. “This event is extremely significant as it continues
to help Sir Elton John’s incredible work and endless dedication in
the fight against HIV/AIDS,” said president of Chopard USA, Thierry
Chaunu (featured above with Sir Elton John).
For Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele (on the cover), co-president of
Chopard worldwide, this involvement with Sir Elton’s foundation is
just one example of her charitable work. Aside from her support to eradicate
HIV/AIDS, she is personally involved in charity organizations such as the
International José Carreras Foundation in the fight against leukemia
and the Sabrina foundation for sick children.
In addition to sponsoring Sir Elton’s Annual Academy Awards®
View Party, Chopard has also lent its support to other EJAF annual benefits
such as the White Tie and Tiara Ball and An Enduring Vision. Furthermore,
the company has also introduced a collection of jeweled watches inspired
by Sir Elton with a portion of the proceeds benefiting EJAF.
“I am very pleased to be co-hosting the 13th Annual Academy
Awards® View Party, to benefit my foundation, with Chopard,” said
Sir Elton. “[T]hey have proven to be a wonderfully supportive partner
[of the foundation].”
